The IMO has formally accepted a comprehensive framework of competencies addressing the Human Element for marine professionals, developed in an international workshop led by Commodore David Squire CBE, the Editor of Alert!. Use of this framework will improve the treatment of the Human Element across the marine industry with a resulting improvement in both safety and performance. Competencies are based on the role responsibilities described in Series 3 of Alert! (issues 22-30) which was sponsored by Lloyd's Register Foundation. See below right to download the document now.
Alert! is a Nautical Institute project, sponsored by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, that aims to improve awareness of the human element in the maritime industry. Since the project began in 2003, 40 issues of the award-winning Alert! international human element bulletin have been produced, with 2.5 million copies distributed worldwide. Although no further issues of the bulletin will be published, the project continues to serve the maritime industry as a valuable resource for all to use.
This website contains all 350 articles that have been published in the Alert! bulletin, along with 400 centre-spread graphics, 21 instructional videos and 250 papers and presentations. Together, this material comprises a valuable and searchable resource for naval architects, mariners, engineers, port operators, regulators and insurers. We encourage all users to explore this unrivalled body of knowledge and to apply human element principles to ship design and operation.
